King Meng Rai, established Chiang Rai in 1262 as the first capital of the Lanna Thai Kingdom. Near the Kok River. Thirty-four years later, he founded Chiang Mai as a capital city and centre of the Lanna Thai Kingdom and, which was later conquered by Burma. Until 1786, Chiang Rai became a Thai territory and was proclaimed a province during the reign of King Rama VI in 1910.
