Chiang Rai

Northernmost of Thailand, beautiful mountain scenery with rich culture

 King Meng Rai, established Chiang Rai in 1262 as the first capital of the Lanna Thai Kingdom. Near the Kok River. Thirty-four years later, he founded Chiang Mai as a capital city and centre of the Lanna Thai Kingdom and, which was later conquered by Burma. Until 1786, Chiang Rai became a Thai territory and was proclaimed a province during the reign of King Rama VI in 1910. Chiang Rai province’s Golden Triangle bordering Laos and Burma was once the hub of opium production which had much influence on cultural practices and lifestyles. Until this day, entire clans live together in bamboo houses and each village has its character. Today, Chiang Rai is one of the travellers' choices who is passionate about natural tourist attractions, historical of the Lanna Kingdom and ethnic hill tribe villages
